To-Dos Before Installing Your Own Wood Fence

Wood fencing is a great way to create privacy in your backyard, protect pets and children, and give your outdoor space the facelift it needs. But before your trip to the lumber shop, there are a number of important factors to consider. Here are some tips to help you ensure that your fence is installed perfectly:

  1. Check Local Codes: Before you begin building your fence, there are two legal issues to take care of. First, you’ll need to look up the building codes and zoning ordinances in your area. These laws may regulate the type of fence that you can build, including its height and style. Also, make sure you consult with your local homeowners association before installing any fencing. Keep in mind that you may need to obtain a building permit for constructing a fence.
  2. Determine Your Property Line: Knowing where your property line ends is crucial to fence building. To keep from installing fencing in your neighbor’s yard, hire a land surveyor to identify and stake the property line. You may also be able to do this by going to your local planning office and getting a copy of your neighborhood’s planning documents.
  3. Plan Your Layout Carefully: When you have your permit on hand and your property staked out, start your fencing project by carefully laying out the lumber. Use stakes and twine to mark the fencing line, and spray paint to indicate where the fencing posts will go. This planning will help to ensure that your fence is straight, sturdy, and properly placed.
