So you're thinking about adding a wood patio cover to your home...fantastic!
This questionnaire will walk you right through your project. You'll
need to be prepared to enter the length and width of your desired
cover, so if you haven't measured yet, now's the time! We'll wait
right here 'til you get back! Grab your tape measure, and jot down
the overall length and width of the area you'd like to cover, your
friends at J&W Lumber are here to help you with the rest!
First, a brief word on our definition of patio covers. For ease of understanding
we describe a patio cover as any cover that's being attached
to the house, typically with a ledger board. Freestanding covers
with four or more posts that are unattached to the house are
referred to as arbors. Freestanding covers with
two posts are considered trellises.
Pictured below is a diagram that illustrates the "Parts of a patio
cover". This will be helpful as you fill our our
questionaire and make decisions about your project. You'll be
talking like a pro in no time!

We've heard many names, for many covers, including trellis, arbors, cabanas,
lattice pavilions, pergolas and shade arcades. The bottom line seems to be we'd
just like to add a little architectural flare and some shade to a backyard
living area and not "break the bank" in doing so.
You can click on a highlighted link below at any time and get a picture of some
of our more popular designs. Cover design is limited only by your own
creativity; many covers include designer corbel cuts, lattice panels,
decorative hardware, knee braces or custom router work. We can handle it all.
We offer three basic styles of patio covers, trellises and arbors.
Coronado-
4x4 posts sandwiched with 2x6 beams and 2x6 rafters with 2x2 lattice top
Catalina-
4x4 posts covered with 2x6 post fascia sandwiched by 2x8 beams, 2x6 rafters
with 2x2 lattice
Capistrano-
4x6 posts with 2x4 fascia, 4x8 beam set atop post, 4x6 rafters with 2x3
lattice.
Any one of our cover styles can be custom designed to your size specifications
mixing and matching the components. For instance if you're designing an
unattached arbor instead of an attached patio cover we'll design your project
with four posts, all corbel cuts, extra fascia boards, knee braces etc. Feel
free to change sizes of the lattice shade top cover on any patio cover (ie.
2x3's instead of 2x2's). Trellises in the style of your choice will include
only two posts. Longer covers may require the addition of an extra post, no
problem. In general the use of larger components makes for a more massive, eye
pleasing cover. Please do not feel "style bound" by these drawings. At first
glance the design differences may appear quite subtle but it's these little
differences that set each cover apart and define your special project. Seen a
