A wood deck can be a great addition to your backyard, incorporating style with functionality. Whether you want to build a traditional deck or get creative with innovative design, you will need to do some planning to ensure that you end up with an aesthetically pleasing lumber deck that will stand up to the elements. Here are some tips to plan for your new outdoor deck:

  • Know Your Space – Take careful measurements of the area where you want to build so that you know what you realistically have room for. Create a mental picture of what you want the deck to look like and decide whether that design is right for the space. Sketching a picture of the exact deck you want can also be helpful. Some find it helpful to lay string out on the ground, outlining where your new deck will be, to help visualize the deck plan.
  • Select the Right Lumber – You want to build your deck with lumber that will look good and last through both time and weather. Whether you are using treated or untreated wood, it’s important to choose lumber that is high-grade decking wood. Investing a bit extra in quality materials will pay off when you build a long-lasting deck. If you live in an area that is subject to heavy rain and humidity, then a pressure-treated wood is a good choice because it will resist moisture.
  • Clean Up the Area – Remove any grass in the area you want to build your deck on—you will want the land to be level and solid before building. Treat the ground for weeds and lay down a tarp to keep weeds from growing right through your new lumber deck.

My mom plans to have a Cedar decking constructed in her home. We’ll keep in mind to select the right lumber that is high-grade decking wood. We better start looking for a deck contractor who can finish the job right before Christmas.

My wife and I are thinking about doing some DIY woodworking at our house, and we weren’t sure where to get the wood. I never knew that there were different types of wood that you can get from lumberyards, and one should consider high-grade lumber. I really like that you say that pine is usually the most affordable. Since we don’t have that big of a budget, I think we may go with that one.

I want to get a new wood decking or fence installed this July. Thanks for explaining that it would be smart to choose the right type of lumber. It is nice to know that I will want to look into treated wood.
