How Can You Keep Your Deck Looking Brand New?

Adding a deck to your home is a great way to enhance its look and value, while also creating comfortable and functional outdoor space. To prolong the life of your deck, it’s important to protect it from damage caused by the weather. Here are four deck protection tips to consider when building your deck:

  1. Sealing Your Decking: While some types of lumber are more resistant to damage than others, any type of wood used outdoors must be sealed using protective chemicals. Sealants will prevent moisture from infiltrating your decking, which can prevent a number of issues, including staining and rotting.
  2. Regular Cleaning: As the seasons change, debris will naturally accumulate on or around your deck. Dirt, leaves, and other debris promote mold and mildew growth, which can exacerbate the damage caused by moisture exposure. Keeping your deck clean and mildew-free will ensure a longer lifespan and a more beautiful outdoor area.
  3. Annual Refinishing: Refinishing your deck serves several functions. In addition to helping your deck complement the style and décor of your home, staining and painting it also protects the lumber from sun and weather exposure. Refinishing should be done at least once every two years, but the more often you refinish your deck, the better it will look.
  4. UV Protection: Sun exposure can promote fading, rot, and water retention. In addition to staining or painting your deck, consider using a UV-resistant sealer to block those harmful rays. Many stains and paints also have UV-resistant properties, so look for a solution that fits your budget and maintenance level.
