When and Why is Wood Sealing Necessary?

If you have recently completed a DIY deck or fencing project, you’re likely experiencing a great deal of pride. However, in order for your wood fence or deck to last a long time, it’s important that you work hard to maintain it. Here’s a brief look at wood sealing and why it’s necessary:

  • Maintaining Your Lumber’s Beauty: You worked hard to make your wood project beautiful, so you naturally want to keep it that way. Unfortunately, wind, rain, sun, insects, and debris will destroy your deck or fence over time if it is left unprotected. Wood sealant is specially-made to repel all unsavory elements and keep your wood beautiful for years to come.
  • Keeping Your Family Safe: In addition to cosmetic damage, the elements could cause significant structural damage to your fence or deck. Though a rotting fence doesn’t pose much of a threat to your family, a decaying deck or patio cover could do some serious harm. Seal them regularly in order to avoid any risk of them toppling over due to decay.
  • Replacing Old Sealant: One way to tell whether or not your wood needs sealing is by its color—if it’s a bit paler than usual, that means the sun has burned through the previous layer of sealant. Another sign is if water bleeds straight through the wood, instead of forming little beads. Generally speaking, you should seal your wood once every three years or so.
