Essential Tools for the Budding Outdoor Builder

Learning how to build on your own property is one of the most productive hobbies you can engage in. Not only is outdoor building fun, but a new lumber deck, patio cover, or fence can do wonders for your property. However, becoming a skilled outdoor builder takes hard work and certain equipment. Here are just a few of the essential tools every budding outdoor builder should have:

  • Saws: Even if you carefully plan out your project and order precise lengths of lumber, you’ll likely need to cut some pieces yourself. For fast, clean cuts, invest in a high-quality circular saw.
  • Cement: Even if you only plan on working with wood, you’ll find that cement is an important component of many building projects. You can buy cement in fine powder form, which can be mixed with water to provide an excellent foundation for many different kinds of outdoor projects.
  • Stains and Sealers: Though redwood lumber is very durable, it will eventually rot if you don’t properly maintain it. In order to protect your deck or fence from rain, debris, sunlight, and other hazards, you should stain and seal your wood at least once every three years.
  • Lumber: For a high-quality fence, deck, or patio cover, you’ll need good-quality lumber. Be sure you know the exact dimensions of your product before heading to the lumberyard so you don’t overbuy or wind up needing to make multiple trips.
  • Safety Equipment: Though outdoor building projects can be very rewarding, they are also inherently dangerous. In order to stay safe and keep from inhaling sawdust, you should always wear goggles, gloves, and a mask.
