A Beginner’s Guide to Deck Stains

Deck stains deliver an instant upgrade, helping to preserve deck life for years. It’s an easy way to maintain the beauty of your outdoor space. With the variety of options available today, there are a few things to keep in mind when choosing which deck stains will work best for you. To add expert insight on the subject, J&W Lumber invited Penofin representative William Barr to discuss the differences in deck stains, the importance of choosing a penetrating oil-based product, and how often homeowners should stain their decks.

Understanding the Differences Between Deck Stains

The purpose of wood stain is to first preserve and enhance the wood and then change or add color for aesthetic purposes. There are two types of deck stains, solid and transparent. Solid deck stains are similar to paints and mask the rich appeal of natural wood.

However, it’s the beautiful characteristics of woods like hardwoods, California Redwood, and Western Cedar lumber, which appeal to people who are building decks. Therefore, a transparent stain is often preferable. A transparent stain provides the same wood protection but allows the grain pattern to be visible.

The Purpose of a Penetrating Oil

In addition to choosing between solid and transparent wood stains, it’s also important to use penetrating oil products. These allow the stain to seep into the wood and protect it from the inside out. Effective exterior wood stains have always started with an oil base. Then, over time, other features like UV inhibitors, mildewcides, and a spectrum of color options have been added.

Penofin stands for “penetrating, oil, finish” and specifically uses rosewood oil as its product base and leaves a transparent finish. As long as the wood is prepared properly by starting with a clean, dry surface, the penetrating oil will seep into the wood’s pores and protect it better. It won’t chip, unlike paint that sits on the surface and is prone to chipping due to the wood expanding and contracting.

How Often Should Decks Be Stained?

There are several factors that determine how often a deck should be stained. Sun exposure, climate, and foot traffic all affect a deck’s appearance over time. The typical longevity is one to two years before a deck needs to be stained. However, everyone’s preference varies.

Some prefer a sharp, pristine appearance and refinish their decks more often. While others rely on patio covers and mild weather exposure to help prolong the look of their deck and may wait a few years before staining it. Fortunately, when the time comes for a refresh, there are plenty of products to choose from.

J&W Lumber in San Diego and the surrounding Southern California areas carries several Penofin deck stains including Architectural, Red Label, Hardwood Label, Gold Label Hardwood, Marine, and All Heart, as well as the brand’s wood cleaner, brightener, and stripper to simplify maintenance.

J&W Lumber also carries Messmer’s UV Plus wood and deck stains which beautifies exterior home projects and offers resistance to UV degradation. It’s also available in several colors and has a mildew-resistant coating that won’t peel when properly applied.
