Getting GREEN with REDwood

05/05/2011

Redwood is renewable, recyclable and cleaner to produce than plastics. Using it is a great way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Trees take carbon out of the air and store it in wood fiber, keeping that carbon safely out of the atmosphere. Redwood is grown and harvested with the highest environmental standards and all product-producing redwood forests are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council or Sustainable Forestry Initiative, a national forest conservation program that promotes sustainable forestry using internationally recognized standards f or sustainable forest management.

The redwood used for decks, fences, gazebos, etc. is grown along California’s central and north coast in privately owned forests. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, it is estimated that each year, forests in the United States remove the greenhouse gases emitted by 139 million cars. The production of wood reduces carbon emissions while the production of steel and concrete increases carbon emissions. Unlike other building materials, wood is renewable. Growth exceeds harvest across California and there is roughly the same amount of forestland in the United States today as there was 100 years ago.

J&W Lumber is committed to environmental sustainability by providing the consumer with lumber from Northern California mills that have certification under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI).
