How the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Makes Building with Green Lumber Accessible to Everyone

Market demands of lumber suppliers and loggers always affect the types of lumber made available to the public. Today, there is a growing emphasis on “going green” throughout the lumber and construction industries. Consumers and members of the lumber industry alike are looking for wood that is harvested efficiently and sustainably. That’s why J&W Lumber works with mills that participate in the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. Let’s take a look at what sustainable forestry is and how the Sustainable Forestry Initiative works:

Sustainable forestry is a term that describes many different activities aimed at harvesting wood and other natural resources while preserving the health and vitality of forests. Broad goals of sustainable forestry and lumber harvesting include the preservation of old growth forests, maintaining natural habitats, and protecting local wildlife. These goals can be accomplished in many different ways, including replacing harvested plants and limiting deforestation in certain areas. While many of these practices are based on current laws regulating the lumber industry, others are enforced by third-party organizations that provide sustainable forestry certification.

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) is one such organization. SFI provides a wide range of services that allow lumber suppliers and consumers to safely choose high-quality wood that was harvested with the environment in mind. This includes a variety of SFI certification programs that allow consumers to determine how their end product, such as a deck, patio cover, or fence, impacts the environment. The more SFI-certified lumber you use, the greener your project will be.
