Understanding How Weather Can Affect Lumber Decking and Fencing

High-quality wood decking and fencing are often thought of as “maintenance-free” outdoor features. However, like all wood items, your deck and fence require regular care to ensure that they’re properly shielded from the elements. Here’s a look at some of the weather-related issues that affect lumber and how you can prevent them from damaging your deck or fence:

  1. Fading: As your deck and fence are exposed to sunlight, they will begin to fade due to the ultraviolet radiation produced by solar rays. While preventing fading entirely is impossible, you can reduce the effect with staining. Staining will give your deck or fencing rich color that penetrates deep into the surface of the lumber. When the wood fades, simply re-stain it to restore its beautiful hue.
  2. Water Damage: Depending on the type of wood you use for your deck or fence, it may be more or less resistant to moisture problems such as rotting or water damage. However, all lumber used in outdoor applications should be treated with a sealant. This prevents moisture from permeating the lumber—a problem which can lead to rotting, mildew, mold growth, and staining.
  3. Discoloration: Dirt and grime can also affect the appearance of your deck. The effect of dirt buildup can be amplified by water, sunlight exposure, debris, and poor maintenance. The key to preventing discoloration is regular sweeping and proactive deck maintenance, including sealing, staining, and scrubbing. Take care of your lumber deck or fence and it will resist all types of discoloration throughout its lifespan.
